چکیده

We report the discovery of emission features in the X-ray spectrum of GRO J1655-40 obtained with RXTE during the observation of 1997, Feb 26. We have fitted the features firstly by two Gaussian lines which in four spectra analysed have average energies of 5.85 ± 0.08 keV and 7.32 ± 0.13 keV, strongly suggestive that these are the red and blue shifted wings of an iron disk line. These energies imply a velocity of ∼0.33 c. The blue wing is less bright than in the calculated profiles of disk lines near a black hole subject to Doppler boosting, however known Fe absorption lines in GRO J1655-40 at energies between ∼7 and 8 keV can reduce the apparent brightness of the blue wing. Secondly, we have fitted the spectra using the disk line model of Laor based on a full relativistic treatment plus an absorption line, and show that good fits are obtained. This gives a restframe energy of the disk line between 6.4 and 6.8 keV indicating that the line is iron K α emission probably of significantly ionized material. The Laor model shows that the line originates in a region of the accretion disk extending from ∼10 Schwarzschild radii from the black hole outwards. The line is direct evidence for the black hole nature of the compact object and is the first discovery of a highly red and blue shifted iron disk line in a Galactic source.

Sub-arcsecond observations using the Very Large Array (VLA) are presented of low-luminosity H2O maser emission in M82, M51, and NGC4051. New maser features have been detected within the M82 starburst complex. They are largely associated with star-forming activity such as optically-identified starburst-driven winds, H ii regions, or the early phase of star-formation in the galaxy. H2O maser in M...

Se p 20 01 Water Maser Emission from the Active Nucleus in M 51

22GHz water vapor ‘kilomaser’ emission is reported from the central region of the Whirlpool galaxy M51 (NGC5194). The red-shifted spectral features (VLSR∼ 560 km s ), flaring during most of the year 2000, originate from a spatially unresolved maser spot of size < ∼ 30mas (< ∼ 1.5 pc), displaced by < ∼ 250mas from the nucleus. The data provide the first direct evidence for the association of an ...

Evidence for an Untruncated Accretion Disk in the Broad-line Radio Galaxy 4c+74.26

We present evidence for a broad, ionized Fe Kα line in the XMM-Newton spectrum of the broad-line radio galaxy (BLRG) 4C+74.26. This is the first indication that the innermost regions of the accretion flow in BLRGs contain thin, radiatively efficient disks. Analysis of the 35 ks XMM-Newton observation finds a broad line with an inner radius close to the innermost stable circular orbit for a maxi...

Iron K Line Emission in Agn: Observations

Iron Kα lines are key diagnostics of the central regions of AGN. Their profiles indicate that they are formed deep in the potential well of the central black hole, where extreme broadening and red shift occur. The profiles are most easily reproducible in an accretion disk: the lack of significant emission blue-ward of the rest energy is difficult produce in other geometries. In one source an ap...
